So it's been a while. Tough noogies.

[info]tmkr recently asked for [info]edouardinho's hand size. We figured it could be gleaned from his shoe size,  but apparently not. Being the clever engineers that we are, and not having a ruler, we came up with this helpful picture to give an estimate:

002

(His is the hairy one. They don't call him Chewbacca for nothing...)

In other news, BriDawg, The Mad #%@!ing Hungarian, and I went to Giordano's on Friday. On the way back, we found an alley named Osgood Place. Interestingly, this building apparently has no number, though other buildings in the alley did have numbers... Or maybe the building is named Osgood Place. How coincidentally that the Osgood Place building is located on Osgood Place...

Oh, yeah, my show was great fun. The Usual Suspects all showed up, and we went to In-N-Out afterwards. The highlight appears to have been Realtime, the 2005 quartet champions and headliners on our show. Very cool.

OK, here's a sop to all the bird lovers out there. I'm betting it's either a turkey vulture or a wild turkey.

002

I saw this beast wandering around outside the house today, and I managed to just snap a picture before it strutted away.

Tragically, no pimped-out Chevettes today...

As if pimped-out rides aren't enough, I occasionally find myself surrounded by Dungeons&Dragons-playing, sword-wielding, magic-incanting, Tolkein-loving druids. Fortunately, I don't go up to Berkeley that often, but every once in a while, I find an expatriate who has ventured into the Real World. One such encounter occurred today.

That's right! Apparently Tolkien's entwives were not some form of animated female tree-shepherd living in Middle Earth, but rather a frizzy-haired white woman driving (badly) a Toyota Camry. Who knew!

(I'd like to extend special appreciation to the California Highway Patrol for not pulling me over while trying to get a decent shot of this buffoonery. You guys rock! PS. Is it legal to take a photograph while piloting an automobile?)

We went to dinner with [info]loopylape and [info]kranki tonight, at a small Italian restaurant named Fellini O. Food good, service could've been better.

After dinner, we had to decide what to do about dessert. [info]loopylape and I are both fans of root beer floats, an item not normally served in small Italian restaurants. So, we explored our options:

  1. Go across the street to Red Robin to get an IBC root beer float. Pro: contains IBC; professionally made to exacting specifications. Con: who ever heard of walking into a restaurant to order a $4.00 root beer float to go?
  2. Go across the street to Target to buy IBC root beer, then take home and make float there. Pro: Price is right; you never know what great things you'll find at Target; float customizable. Con: none, really.
  3. Go to BevMo and buy Virgil's root beer, take home and make float there. Pro: Contains Virgil's (arguably even better than IBC!). Con: we had no idea where a BevMo was.

A variety of other and increasingly silly ideas were also discussed. Eventually we ended up at Target. At the $1.00 bargain bin.

Check out the haul )

But even with all that, the picture of the day still ended up being the McSunset...

Y'know, sometimes I forget just how pervasive Pimp My Ride has become in today's society. And then I see something like this:

002

That's right - a mid-80s Buick Century, good condition, but with 21" custom rims. Man, those really turn a humdrum people carrier into a Cruisin' Machine. I'm reminded of a Drawn Together quote (paraphrased): "Who would spend money on gold rims, purple leather seats and flip-down LCD screens for three-thousand-dollar Geos?"

... when you forget your camera two days in a row!!!!

So there are a few big things going on. First, the Check Engine light came on in my car on Wednesday last week. I took it in on Thursday, and had it back by Friday with the Check Engine light off. I drove to Stockton on Saturday, didn't drive on Sunday, and started up the car this morning. First thing, the Check Engine light is back on. Oh, poo.

So after an emergency drop-off at the mechanic, I managed to get to work only 5 minutes late for my daily start-of-day meeting.

Turns out the engine misfires periodically (possibly due to using cheap gas!) and, when it does, the Check Engine light comes on. The mechanic just reset it and the car was fine.

On top of all this, the "ambient temperature sensor" is finally fixed!!! I've had three different mechanics look at this thing and, finally, one was able to get it working. Now, instead of showing -40 degrees F on the dashboard, it actually shows a decent number!

002

Notice the +56 F? And notice the distinct lack of a Check Engine Light? Those two things haven't both happened at the same time in the last year!!!

(So you may not think getting the ambient temperature sensor fixed is a big deal. It generally wasn't, except that sometimes it would flip from -40F to +100F. And apparently, this is some sort of major problem, because a "bell" would sound every time it flipped. And it would flip every 8 seconds or so - even after [info]tmkr's dad pulled the fuse on it!)

As for the Second Big Thing, my chorus competed this weekend. We scored 88.25 out of 100, which is pretty good and was reasonable given our performance. However, it wasn't where we wanted to be (we wanted a 90+). 90 is our next big mark, and we've only scraped it once (89.7 last October). So we're VERY hungry now.

So the Engineering group at CT Summation (of which I am a member!) had a thank-you launch for the product release we just completed. Yay us! Though there were a number of highlights, the biggest one was a downer: my car got sideswiped by a Ryder truck! (My car was parked in front of the eatery, a delightful hole-in-the-wall named Kennedy's Irish Pub and Curry House, and the accident-causer was an employee.)

The worst damage was that the driver's side mirror was ripped completely off.

034

Ironically, most of our party was sitting outside not 10 feet from the car when the accident happened, and the Mad !*@&ing Hungarian and The Neighbor-of-All were out of their seats immediately ready to crush the driver and see him driven before them. I was able to get away from my game of pool in the nick of time to quench the potential conflagration - fortunately for the driver!

Weirdly, though, the side mirror showed up in pictures throughout the day. It appeared to have disintegrated entirely, and yet, like a poltergeist, was caught on media:

Later on, though, the whole episode was proven to be yet another example of paranormal skullduggery:

040
Boo, paranormal skullduggery! Hooray, beer! (Yes, it's a Red Stripe reference.)

And I went to a student/faculty dinner put on by [info]tmkr's department's student association. It was a ton of fun (I don't get to hang out with college students any more!!!!), but I didn't take a single picture.

Oh, yeah, and I took this. It's the Cool Green Building (the bottom floor of which is Cafe Zoetrope, which is owned by Francis Ford Coppola, and is also home America Zoetrope, Coppola's production company), and the Transamerica Pyramid - or whatever we're calling it this decade. Cool.

Both Wednesday and Thursday were long work days. To the point that I completely forgot to take any pictures on Thursday. Oops.

I did finish this book on leadership. Note that it's not written by THE Vince Lombardi, but rather by his son. Still, some interesting stories and good advice. (I probably wouldn't give it a 2-thumbs-up boffo, but I'm certainly not sad I read it cover-to-cover.)

Bridawg took our team out to lunch today to celebrate the hard work and somewhat-success of our latest product release. Not being terribly familiar with fine cuisine of San Francisco, he asked me for suggestions. Not being terribly familiar with fine cuisine of San Francisco, I asked opentable.com. We quickly settled on Sens, a rustic restaurant in the Embarcadero Center.

003

002

Interestingly, I also discovered the difference between a good upscale restaurant and a great upscale restaurant: the attention to detail. One of our party was a strict vegetarian, including no eggs. The waiter served us bread, and our compatriot asked him if there were eggs in it. We also ordered the flatbread appetizer, and again he asked if there were eggs in it. Then, at the entree, he had to ask again if one of the dishes had eggs in it. Now granted that this was at lunch and so the B-Team staff might have been on duty, but a waiter at a great upscale restaurant would've picked up the theme and asked the cook for which dishes had eggs.

Still, the food was delightful. I especially recommend the lamb riblets (rack of lamb cut into individual ribs) and the chicken wrap.

My chorus had its last rehearsal before contest this weekend. I don't know if we're as ready as we want to be, but we have some fire in our bellies. We know we have a job to do. I hope we do what we're capable of.

For the last 6 months, I shared an office at work with BriDawg and the Beast from the Middle East. This worked out great, as we were trying to get some major stuff done in a short amount of time and the amount of time spent walking to someone else's desk to collaborate was skyrocketing. We also had 3 whiteboards, a projector, and a spare computer.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. So at the start of my day, the view from my chair was this:

006

By 11 AM, the view from my new world-class cube was this:

004

(It's only as interesting as it is because I put that poster on the wall!)

And speaking of grousing about the office, take a look at this view when you get off the elevators. (I had to take the picture without the flash, because the flash actually made the hideous yellow look better. This is pretty close to the actual color!) And see those doors at the end? Yeah, those are locked during the day - so visitors have to knock to be allowed to enter the lobby. Gawd, this feels like a cross between Joe vs. the Volcano and Office Space.

008

In other less serious topics, I came across this sign at the entrance to a parking garage on the way to lunch. At least it's honest!

003

PS. When picking my mood, I looked up the word exanimate. From Merriam-Webster:

1. lacking animation; spiritless
2. being or appearing lifeless

Yeah, that's pretty much spot-on...
